Bleeding is a major cause of morbidity and death after trauma and timely identification and treatment of acute hemorrhage are important aspects of trauma care. Coagulopathy in trauma patients results from loss of platelets and coagulation factors through consumption and dysfunction. Factors that contribute to the “bloody vicious cycle” of coagulopathy include dilution, acidosis, and hypothermia. Appropriate control of hemorrhage and optimal use of blood products are essential for improving patient survival. This slide presentation will describe the role of hemodilution, hypothermia, and acidosis in trauma-related coagulopathy. Strategies to prevent the development of coagulopathy and progression of shock will be discussed. These strategies include optimizing resuscitative techniques and the use of blood products for support.
Coagulopathy in Trauma is intended for transfusion specialists, hematologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients with trauma.
