Thrombin generation plays a pivotal role in the mechanism of clot formation and as such is the target of several therapeutic agents. Hemostatic agents such as recombinant activated Factor VII and Factor Eight Inhibitor Bypassing Agent control hemorrhage by promoting thrombin generation, whereas anticoagulants inhibit or prevent thrombin generation that occurs in excess or at inappropriate sites. Because of the complexity of coagulation, the hemostatic effects of these agents require careful monitoring by means of coagulation tests, such as prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time. However, the results of standard coagulation tests do not necessarily correspond with the pharmacokinetics of the agents and do not predict response to treatment. In this symposium, the faculty will discuss ways of optimizing the monitoring of therapies and the importance of tailoring the treatment to individual patients. In addition, the faculty will review the issues regarding monitoring patients treated with several anticoagulants.
